Oh, hey! A meme. I don't do these often, but this one caught my interest. Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] caruso, whose new SN I had to think about to remember even though I was JUST looking at the entry:

Comment with a story I've written, and I will tell you something I knew, learned, or wondered about while writing it that didn't make it onto the page.

Everything fic-related on my journal is under the fic tag. My memories also have a couple older things that only got posted to comms or what-have-you, though I warn you that the older a fic, the less likely I am to remember writing it. You can ask about prompt challenges or whatever, too - if it's a bit of fic, and I wrote it, it's eligible.

"Three Things John Winchester Never Did With His Boys".

Read it again, just to remind myself and STILL fuckin' break down at #2.

You kill me sometimes.

God, that fic was fun to write. I love doing AUs and crossovers and stuff like that.

Anyway, in answer: Ever since I wrote it, I have been convinced that everything in the SPN verse would be a billion times better if John hadn't made that deal. Even Dean would be better off, since he wouldn't have gone to hell. He's living on, like, the compound interest of borrowed time, and I think he's feeling the strain. I don't remember the events of S2 as clearly as I used to, but I do recall thinking that if they'd kept the Colt in their possession, it would have made things a lot stickier for the YED, and possibly the events of the finale couldn't have even happened.

How many shows do you watch where everyone would be better off if one of the main characters was dead?

Three Things John Winchester Never Did With His Sons! Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] lissa_ann! Out (http://catslash.livejournal.com/190774.html)

I'm a ninja.

No, I think Lissa's the ninja. ;)

"Out" is a fic that I've never been very happy with. It's overly precious, I think, and was fine for passing the time in the laundromat, but didn't necessarily need to make it to the internet.

Which does not technically fulfill the requirements of the meme, but as I said, the older the fic, the less I remember writing it.

The two (very different so there's probably something from each) stories/ficlets with Smecker as Owen's father.

What was interesting with those was finding the difference between the Smecker who decided his son didn't need him and he didn't need his son and the one realized how wrong that all was. He does not, to put it mildly, reach out to other people easily. I had to figure out what would change that. In both fics, in a way, it was the same thing - something unexpected, a shock. Owen's death in the first made him realize he'd fucked up yet again, and the surprise of Il Duce's parting words (like, actually having parting words to offer) combined with the parallels between them (sons who grew up without knowing them) in the second. Plus, of course, the physical, mental, and emotional strain he'd already gone through with Yakavetta's trial.

So, in short, with those I learned a little about writing the same situation two different ways with two different outcomes and making them both make sense. Though I admit I like the depressing one better.

Excellent meme, which I am definitely stealing.

Torchwood/Jeeves crossover. (http://catslash.livejournal.com/384487.html#cutid1)

I could definitely never write from Bertie's perspective. Never in a trillion years. His voice and my style do not match at all. So instead, I was pondering this potential crossover from Jack's point of view, and started thinking about how Bertie would look to a total outsider, who not only didn't know him but didn't have the perspective of being part of that canon. So I found out that, when given a chance and an interested audience, he's a storyteller. There's a reason he wrote all those books!

(Also, Jack likes being told stories. I imagine it's a nice change from being the one doing the telling.)

Thanks for the insight. I wrote a wank!fic in Bertie's voice for [livejournal.com profile] mmom two years ago and I have a megafic (over 10,000 words) out to beta that I did in Jeeve's voice even though MOST of canon is in Bertie's. I think it's the hardest fandom to write just because the language is so specific and so hard and if you do it WRONG it really stinks up the room.

YES. Bertie is terrifyingly easy to get wrong. You need a thorough grasp of the slang, and to handle Bertie's narrative with a delicate touch to straddle the fine line between too exaggerated and too flat. Eep. I'll stick with writing Jeeves (or silly crossovers) any day of the week, thanks.
