Oh, hey! A meme. I don't do these often, but this one caught my interest. Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] caruso, whose new SN I had to think about to remember even though I was JUST looking at the entry:

Comment with a story I've written, and I will tell you something I knew, learned, or wondered about while writing it that didn't make it onto the page.

Everything fic-related on my journal is under the fic tag. My memories also have a couple older things that only got posted to comms or what-have-you, though I warn you that the older a fic, the less likely I am to remember writing it. You can ask about prompt challenges or whatever, too - if it's a bit of fic, and I wrote it, it's eligible.

Excellent meme, which I am definitely stealing.

Torchwood/Jeeves crossover. (http://catslash.livejournal.com/384487.html#cutid1)

I could definitely never write from Bertie's perspective. Never in a trillion years. His voice and my style do not match at all. So instead, I was pondering this potential crossover from Jack's point of view, and started thinking about how Bertie would look to a total outsider, who not only didn't know him but didn't have the perspective of being part of that canon. So I found out that, when given a chance and an interested audience, he's a storyteller. There's a reason he wrote all those books!

(Also, Jack likes being told stories. I imagine it's a nice change from being the one doing the telling.)

Thanks for the insight. I wrote a wank!fic in Bertie's voice for [livejournal.com profile] mmom two years ago and I have a megafic (over 10,000 words) out to beta that I did in Jeeve's voice even though MOST of canon is in Bertie's. I think it's the hardest fandom to write just because the language is so specific and so hard and if you do it WRONG it really stinks up the room.

YES. Bertie is terrifyingly easy to get wrong. You need a thorough grasp of the slang, and to handle Bertie's narrative with a delicate touch to straddle the fine line between too exaggerated and too flat. Eep. I'll stick with writing Jeeves (or silly crossovers) any day of the week, thanks.
