When I started this meme, I had a reason for choosing to do it, rather than be passingly amused and moving along. Now my brain hurts and I don't remember what it was.
Borrowed from
glendaglamazon.
List your favorite role for each actor (doesn't matter your opinion of the movie), then add three of your own. (I added explanations, which is probably why the brain hurty, but that was my call.)
+ Tom Hanks - Woody, Toy Story 1&2. Because, frankly, it's the only role of his I can remember anything about. I haven't watched anything else of his in years.
+ Jim Carrey - Stanley Ipkiss, The Mask. My Jim Carrey love has died a slow and painful death, so I haven't seen anything newer than, like, 1997, but I still like Stanley.
+ Tobey Maguire - Peter Parker, Spider-Man 1&2, I suppose. Because - I honestly don't give a crap about Tobey Maguire.
+ Mel Gibson - For this, I can only borrow
glendaglamazon's reply: "HATE MEL GIBSON." Between The Patriot and Hamlet, he's made such a bad impression on me that I will never, ever like him in anything. Ever.
+ Ben Affleck - Bartleby, Dogma. The role that made me say, "Holy shit, Ben Affleck can act!"
+ Nicole Kidman - Satine, Moulin Rouge. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've seen her in anything else.
+ Liv Tyler - *chokes and dies* No.
+ Harrison Ford - Han Solo, Star Wars. Such a cliche, I know, but since the competition is pretty much Hollywood Homicide, Han wins by default.
+ Natalie Portman - Taffy Dale, Mars Attacks!. Because in Star Wars, she appears to be on horse tranquilizers.
+ Ewan McGregor - Catcher Block, Down With Love. I've never seen him slicker or more charming.
+ Edward Norton - Can't say. I didn't finish The Italian job and I can't recall him at all in The People V. Larry Flynt.
+ Angelina Jolie - Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted. By default, as I've just discovered that haven't seen her in anything else.
+ John Cusack - Rob Gordon, High Fidelity. Because I am eternally grateful to everyone involved in that movie for not spoiling my love of the book. *whew*
+ Renee Zellweger - Roxie Hart, Chicago. <3
+ Johnny Depp - Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Carribean. He's brilliant in everything, regardless of the quality of the movie itself, but - Captain Jack!
+ Sean Penn - Haven't. Don't care. Still pissed about Oscars.
+ Will Smith - J, Men in Black 1&2. Also by default, but I really do like him as J. "'Best of the best of the best, SIR!'"
+ Meg Ryan - Wait, she's played different roles?
+ Catherine Zeta-Jones - Marylin Rexroth, Intolerable Cruelty. She and George Clooney made me realize that sometimes the best movie kisses are the ones that don't . . . quite . . . happen.
+ Sandra Bullock - I give a shit. Oops, wait, no I don't. Sorry, my bad.
+ Gwyneth Paltrow - Helen Quilley, Sliding Doors. SD's plot follows her character in two different universes after they diverge from one moment in time, and she does a great job playing a role that's really two-in-one.
+ Brad Pitt - See above, in re: Sandra Bullock.
+ Keanu Reeves - David Allen Griffin, The Watcher. I've seen quite a few of Keanu's movies, and this is the only one where I've seen him act. And do it fairly effectively, too. He should really look into playing psycho serial killers more often. It suits him.
+ Cameron Diaz - Faith, The Invisible Circus. The only movie where I haven't been constantly reminded of the fact that I am watching Cameron Diaz. She fades into it nicely.
+ Christina Ricci - Wednesday Addams, The Addams Family flicks. Haven't seen her in anything that made much of an impression since.
+ Drew Barrymore - Dylan Saunders, Charlie's Angels 1&2. Shut up.
+ Kate Hudson - Have not seen her in anything particularly remarkable.
+ Marilyn Monroe - Annabel Norris, Don't Bother to Knock. By default, though I did like her in it.
+ Adam Sandler - . . . moving on.
+ Robin Williams - I refuse to admit that I ever liked Robin Williams in anything. Ever.
+ Arnold Schwarzenegger - Mr Freeze, Batman & Robin. Just kidding.
+ Bruce Willis - Spike the dog, Rugrats Go Wild! No. Really. I was pretty impressed with his voice acting. Not every actor can pull it off.
+ Eddie Murphy - Donkey, Shrek. Say it with me - default!
+ Morgan Freeman - . . . yeah, I got nothin'.
+ Sigourney Weaver - Gwen DeMarco, Galaxy Quest. First movie I'd seen her in and still my favourite.
+ George Clooney - Miles Massey, Intolerable Cruelty. See above, in re: Catherine Zeta-Jones.
+ Julia Stiles - Ophelia in Michael Almereyda's production of Hamlet. It was a pretty tough call between that and Kat Stratford in 10 Things I Hate About You (one of the few teen movies I genuinely like), but Hamlet wins because her performance and Almereyda's direction make Ophelia into a person rather than a plot device.
+ Jodie Foster - Don't think I've seen any of her work.
+ Sean Connery - I'm sorry, but whenever I think of Sean Connery I think of League of Extraordinary Gentleman and Medicine Man. So I will never be able to take him seriously.
+ Christian Slater - Don't care.
+ Julianne Moore - Also not with the caring.
+ Michael Pitt - Never heard of him.
+ Uma Thurman - Daphne, Where the Heart Is. No, not that one. The other one. One of her early roles, in which she is sweet and a little crazy and fun to watch.
+ Ethan Hawke - Troy Dyer, Reality Bites. Just typing that makes me want to watch it again.
+ Elijah Wood - The random kid in Back to the Future II. Because I had more fun going, "Oh my god, it's tiny Elijah! With the same big blue eyes!" than I did during the entirety of LotR.
+ Adrien Brody - I . . . haven't seen anything of his. I hadn't realized that. I should fix that.
+ Leonardo DiCaprio - Arnie Grape, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?. For all the issues I have with the movie (namely, that it totally ruined the story and all its characters and the book is awesome and you should read it and ignore the movie, please), I think this performance is the most convincing I've seen from him. It's certainly a bigger stretch than pretending to be attracted to Kate Winslet.
+ Kate Winslet - Speaking of whom . . . like Johnny Depp, Kate rocks in everything she does, but I think my favourite is Madeleine LeClerc in Quills.
+ Ian McKellen - I can't choose between Gandalf and Magneto, because I'm too busy being embarrassed that I've only seen one of his many other movies. I'll have to work on that.
+ Crispin Glover - Willard Stiles, Willard. Not only was this the role that convinced me than I needed to see more, but I've never seen him so perfect in anything else. And believe me, I've seen plenty.
+ Kenneth Branagh - Benedick, Much Ado About Nothing. As much as I like some of his other characters, I've never had more fun watching him than in Much Ado.
+ Willem Dafoe - Agent Paul Smecker, The Boondock Saints. A gay FBI agent with a vicious sense of humour and a near-psychic ability to reconstruct crime scenes. What other choice is there?

Now I know why this movie is so loved. Thank you.
Tobey Maguire - Peter Parker, Spider-Man 1&2, I suppose. Because - I honestly don't give a crap about Tobey Maguire.
*smiles* I know what you mean. *impish grin*
Crispin Glover - Willard Stiles, Willard. Not only was this the role that convinced me than I needed to see more, but I've never seen him so perfect in anything else. And believe me, I've seen plenty.
*wild grin* Such as his appearance in Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle?
Michael Pitt - Never heard of him.
That makes two of us. *grin*
Sean Connery - I'm sorry, but whenever I think of Sean Connery I think of League of Extraordinary Gentleman and Medicine Man. So I will never be able to take him seriously.
Medicine Man? *horrified*
Because I had more fun going, "Oh my god, it's tiny Elijah! With the same big blue eyes!"
*bursts out laughing*
Ewan McGregor - Catcher Block, Down With Love. I've never seen him slicker or more charming.
*laughter* By default I agree with everything Ewan McGregor.
Ben Affleck - Bartleby, Dogma. The role that made me say, "Holy shit, Ben Affleck can act!"
When I think Dogma, I think Alan Rickman. *evil grin* Then Jay and Silent Bob. Then Bartleby and Loki. *evil, evil grin*
Jim Carrey - Stanley Ipkiss, The Mask.
Me too. *smiles* It's still my favourite, after all this time.
I was looking for what you were going to say about James Franco, actually. *laughter*

You mean you haven't seen Boondock? Shame! See it! You must! Willem is just a small part of why it's so amazing. Also, one of the cops, Detective Greenly, is played by one of Maine's local celebrity heroes, Bob Marley. Bob's as big a deal here as Stephen King is.
*wild grin* Such as his appearance in Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle?
=P Yes. But, uh, I've never seen that movie. And certainly not more than once. And in no way do I own it. At all. *shuffles movie collection*
Medicine Man? *horrified*
Hate. That. Movie. HATE. See, not only is it irritating and featuring a lead actress whose idea of acting is yelling, but I was forced to watch it in different science classes TWICE. I hated it the first time, and I almost cried when I recognized the opening credits the second time. So. Hate.
I was looking for what you were going to say about James Franco, actually. *laughter*
Heh. That would have been another default; I like him much better in F&G than S-M, but it's movie roles, not TV roles, so that wouldn't count. I haven't seen any of his other movies yet.
