Here's a little question: Is good fanfic for a bad movie/show/whatever a shock? The evil entities at ff.net forced me to check out the section for Charlie's Angels moviefic, and a couple of the pieces I've tried have been quite good. I was stunned at first, but then I thought - and why not? When I write fanfic for something that's less than brilliant, I tend to put a little extra effort into it, because it takes that much more to make my work good. On the other hand, you'd think that some fandoms couldn't lead to good fic no matter what the writer tries.

So what do you think: Is good fic for bad fandom surprising or inevitable?

Good fanfic arising from bad source material is less a shock than an inevitability these days. After all, the sheer volume of ff that exists for (both good and) bad source these days is statistically bound to contain at least a good fic or two. The shock lies less in its existence than in those rare instances when one actually stumbles across it. 'Cause let's face it, there's an assload of fic ranging from cringe-inducingly bad to "meh" out there that must be waded through before tripping over anything even remotely good. (I'm speaking, of course, about potpourris like ff and not of mailing lists, lj's, etc. where the quality of authors is above average.)
