Here was tonight's debate.

McCain: *makes a bunch of shit up*

Obama: *has actual facts*

McCain: *repeats all the same shit*

Obama: *patiently reiterates genuine information*

McCain: *debates an Obama existing only in his head*

Obama: *generously pretends McCain has not totally lost it*

The end.

Comments from NPR paraphrased:

Q: (Something about appointing Supreme Court Justices...)

McCain: It's all about their qualifications. (whispers/mumbles: Unless they're pro-choice, in which case they're disqualified.)

*head-desk-repeat*

Oh, that was definitely quite a moment. For the most part I was unimpressed with all the talking point versus talking point, but that was quite the tap dance. My girlfriend and I just looked at each other like "Um, how's that not having a litmus test?"

*snerk* Yeah, it's not really all that different from the first two in that respect.

I've heard people speculate that he's going senile. I can buy it.

Should I be glad I missed the debate?

It was a decent debate. It just felt like more of the same - McCain lying his wrinkled ass off, Obama refuting his claims with actual truth and facts, McCain saying the SAME SHIT Obsma just SAID was WRONG. SHUT UP MCCAIN.

It was definitely the most "spirited" of the debates, but there was little new stuff from either side. I did find the exchanges on Ayers and negative campaigning, abortion, and education interesting, though.

My mom said McCain came across as kind of crazy whereas Obama stayed calm, and that was what people would focus on. Y/N?

She also didn't like that Obama said he would try to keep the Supreme Court balanced, whereas McCain said he wouldn't let his biases interfere in appointing a SC justice. That was the only thing Obama said that she didn't like.

McCain did come off as kinda grumpy old man, and I thought the sighing and eyerolling was childish. Plus he kept looking up and smiling oddly at something or someone in the audience, and...yeah, that was a little weird to me. But I would not agree that the difference between their composure is anything people will focus on. I didn't think he was crazy old man up there, or anything.

Your mom was not listening! Or maybe she just understood McCain and Obama differently than I did. What McCain said at first was, I would consider anyone based on their qualifications, not ideology. Then he said he would look for people who adhere strictly to the Constitution, which sounded to me like he was saying he was for textualists, which I would argue is absolutely a kind of bias regarding how the Constitution should be read and understood. Then he said "I would consider anyone in their qualifications. I do not believe that someone who has supported Roe v. Wade that would be part of those qualifications. But I certainly would not impose any litmus test."

I understood him to be saying that if someone supports Roe v. Wade, that makes them unqualified. But maybe your mom understood him to be saying that someone's position on Roe v. Wade is not a measure of how qualified they are to be on the Supreme Court.

I don't remember Obama saying he would try to keep the Supreme Court balanced. He said...(snurching from CNN's transcript) "I will look for those judges who have an outstanding judicial record, who have the intellect, and who hopefully have a sense of what real-world folks are going through."

I can't help thinking that by this point, surely, everyone is looking at McCain and thinking, "wtf did we endorse YOU for?"
