Today is also my grandmother's birthday. She used to be very active, going out for walks and skating with "the girls," and then a couple years ago she was diagnosed with lung cancer. They had to remove part of her lung. She's different now - my mother and I have both noticed it. Before she was healthy and energetic and you could only tell her age from her white hair and wrinkles. Now she's an old woman, scattered and forgetful and tentative at times. She spends a lot of time taking care of my grandfather, her opposite - his body, wrecked by emphysema, is far older than his mind, still strong and sharp as it ever was. It's hard on both of them; my grandmother feels burdened sometimes and my grandfather resents the loss of his prized independence. They get along, though, and I don't know what she'll do when he goes. At night they have drinks and dinner, and they watch TV and have dessert, and talk about whatever needs or doesn't need talking about. I love them both very much.

So, today is my grandmother's birthday.
