The quest to further my Johnny Depp education has begun: I just watched Edward Scissorhands.

It was kind of an odd experience. See, ES was a staple movie in my childhood. My sister and I had several movies that we would get when our mom took us out to rent movies. There was Labyrinth, Fern Gully, and this one. I know Labyrinth by heart, as my interest in it was rekindled in my teens, but I don't remember anything from Fern Gully (including the full title) save the following exchange:

"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive."
"Only fools are positive."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive." *gasp!* "I FELL for it!"

I use this all the time and no one's gotten the reference yet.

*cough* Anyway. Much as I remembered nothing about Fern Gully, I also didn't remember a damn thing about Edward Scissorhands. Not so much as a random snippet of dialogue. (Oddly, I did remember the Animaniacs parody, "Skullhead Boneyhands.")

So when I watched it tonight, I was watching a brand-new movie that I'd seen a hundred times. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also now realize exactly how relaxed Mom was about the movies she let Chelsea and I watch. Obviously, we were not scarred in any way by the movie, so I won't go on about how young we were and yadda. Maybe she realized that kids don't watch movies the same way adults do. There's no guessing what will scare children and what won't bother them a bit.

Anyway. On the off-chance that there is anyone who reads this journal who hasn't seen the movie (ha), I highly recommend it. It's surreal, 'cos, y'know, it's Tim Burton, but it's good enthralling once the ES universe sucks you in.

Next up: A Johnny Depp movie wherein makeup is not a defining element of his character.

Chocolat

Yes, I too have gone on a mad crusade to further my knowledge of Johnny Depp movies...if it continues like this I will have seen every movie he's done, just like I've seen every movie Ewan has done.*sigh*I need to get a life*...anyway! my favorite Johnny character without make-up defining his character(hell, who am I kidding, I'm beginning to love this character more than Jack*gasp!)
Cathryn-if you haven't, you MUST see Chocolat!!! you must must must must must!!!!!
he plays this Irish 'gypsey' type of person and oh, my goodness, I love him so much!
*squee of delight*
jeez, I'm turning into a thirteen year old girl or something...anyway, you must see it. It's kind of ironic that he's in that movie since he hates chocolate, but I'm glad he was. Besides him being in it, though, it really is a good movie and I highly recommend it. :o)
