Wow, I am so glad I decided to watch the second game of that Tigers doubleheader. That was phenomenal.
The starting pitching on both sides was outstanding. Mike Maroth went eight and two-thirds innings (no CG, damn, but since Fernando Rodney got the last out right away, I think I can live with that) and gave up five hits, two walks, and zero runs. Jose Lima was almost as good, except he gave up a run. HA. He did get a complete game, but I'm happy about that because he deserved to be on the losing end of a 1-0 CG.
See, in the ninth inning, he struck out Chris Shelton, and proceeded to point at him and say something. I didn't get a look at his face to make out what it was, but Mario said it was something like "Strike out!" WOW CLASSY. Asshole. So of course Shelty took offense and fired back an f-bomb while he headed for the dugout. (That I did make out. I don't read lips, but there's never any mistaking "Fuck you." Heh.) Lima got all offended, like, whatever. Way to be a bitch to our beloved Shelty, jackhole. I am particularly disappointed by this because I had been thinking during the game about how I like Lima; during the brawl, he kept hold of Guillen and kept him from joining the brawl and getting hurt even worse, which was very cool of him. So seeing him show Shelty up like that for no reason stung a bit.
So, glad you lost 1-0, Lima. I will consider us even.
I want to mention again that Mike was excellent, which is kind of funny since at one point, he threw ten or eleven balls in a row (his control was not the best tonight; he threw roughly forty percent for balls). Sure didn't look like he was going to get to the eighth then. Happily, he got his ass saved by one of the FOUR double plays the Tigers got during that game.
Let me just repeat that.
The Tigers got FOUR doubleplays in that game. That is HOT.
Also, the one run came from a sac fly from Brandon Inge, which scored Dmitri. Brandon's been slumping, to put it mildly, so seeing him get the game-winning RBI was pretty sweet.
Because Mike and Lima were so good, the game was a little over two hours, and it was the most exciting one I've watched in a while. And for once, I don't mean exciting in the "oh my god I hate our offense/defense/closer" kind of way. I mean it in the suspenseful, well-played, everyone-in-this-game-is-kicking-some-serious-ass kind of way. But then, I can't see how a 1-0 game could ever be boring. It's just nice when it's my team that has the one.
