So it somehow never occurred to me to check the cast list for the new Hitchhiker's Guide movie. But as I'm listening to the Shaun of the Dead commentary, they mention Arthur Dent in the same sentence as one Martin Freeman, who played my favourite character, Tim, in The Office. (Martin has a brief cameo as Yvonne's boyfriend in the scene where the two groups meet up, which amuses me because Lucy Davis, who plays Dianne, also plays Tim's love interest in The Office.) Some of you may know Martin better as the male sex scene double in one of the umpteen scrillion storylines in Love Actually.

Anyway. As soon as they said that, I went, "Waitasecond . . ." and hopped on to IMDb.

Y'all, this cast is awesome. Martin Freeman is indeed playing Arthur Dent, we've got Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast (yesyesyes), and Sam Rockwell is Zaphod! I can't really comment on the casting of Ford (Mos Def), since I've never seen the guy in anything, but . . . Mos Def? Okay. Also can't say much about Zooey Deschanel as Trillian (though I associate her with positive vibes, so I guess I have seen her before and can't recall), but at least her name does not double as ghetto slang. Yes, yes, I will happily give Mos the benefit of the doubt. I think I'm just feeling negative because I had to listen to him in the Italian Job trailer for a month when I first started at Movie Gallery.

But - Martin Freeman, Billy Nighy, and Sam Rockwell. (Is there any American actor out there more perfectly suited for Zaphod? I think not.) And I thought I was excited for this movie before. *runs off the check calendar and count the days till May sixth*

I just wish Douglas Adams was around to see this. He was really eager for this movie to happen. It seems unfair that it didn't happen in time for him.

I'm going to -try- to give Mos Def the benefit of the doubt; my problem is that I have very set conceptions in my head of what the characters look like, and I have trouble seeing Ford as anything but the funny looking british guy that played him in the tv show. Which Mos Def totally does not look like.

But, looks aren't everything, and if he can catch the -essence- of Ford, who really cares what he looks like?

*grin* Glad to hear that so much has been settled for this movie!

we've got Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast
*IS UTTERLY THRILLED*

but . . . Mos Def? Okay.
Heh. Me too. And as Ford, too. All of a sudden I think of all the Hitchhiker slash I've read, and I'm - Mos Def?!

I just wish Douglas Adams was around to see this.
So am I. It would have been wonderful.

Mos Def is actually a really good actor; I think he's up for a Golden Globe for a TV movie he did with Alan Rickman (yeah, Snape). I've seen him in a few things and he's a very talented man. I've only seem him in serious roles, though.

Zooey Deschanel's been in two movies with Jason Lee - Almost Famous as Patrick's sister and I can't remember the role she played in Mumford. I liked her in both, though I'm not sure about her as Trillian, if only because I imagine Trillian as British.
