Inquiry:

What's the statute of limitations on songs you should hate but love anyway? In other words, how long before nostalgia becomes an acceptable factor/excuse?

I have a copy of "My Heart Will Go On" complete with clips of dialogue from Titanic. The movie came out when I was fourteen, and I saw it for the first time when I was fifteen (for my birthday!). I am now twenty-six. Is it okay to admit that, due to fond associations, I love the song and always will, or should I keep my mouth shut on the subject for a while longer? What about Ricky Martin's "La Vida Loca," which came out when I was roughly sixteen? When does it become okay to embrace songs (or other forms of media) that become victims of tremendous backlash?

Any song that makes a positive association even if it sucks to the populace at large, can still be called a nostalgic song, even if it only came out last year. That's how I call it. If it makes you think of happy times, then it counts ^^

I think you are correct. It is likely that I am thinking about this too much. XD

Quite likely ;) But that's what the internet's for! XD

Also, while I have ya here, look up "Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer" sometime, I think you'll get a kick out of him >.> I do X3

I adore 'My Heart Will Go On' for the simple reason that we learnt it in choir, and I had so, so much fun singing it. Also, I do like 'La Vida Loca'.

I...hmm. I don't know. A few years works, I think.

Oh, man. That does sound like fun. I do have a few songs I am hugely fond of for the simple reason that I learned it for chorus.

It is possible I am overthinking this.

It was gorgeous in choir, and when I sing along to it now, I still sing the alto. The other one we sang that I adore is 'Walking in the Air' - although I adored that song before, too.

*grins* just a little, maybe.

YES ALTO. In my chorus, we sang the Queen song "Bohemian Rhapsody," and to this day when I hear it on the radio, I'm more inclined to sing the alto part even though I knew the song long before we sang it in chorus.

I happen to have bought a copy of the Titanic soundtrack at one point, it might have been when the movie came out. So really, no need to feel guilty or anything.

Its good music just a little overdramatic but some days you just feel that way.

I even have a Titanic icon. :-)

I still have BOTH Titanic soundtracks. God, how I loved that movie as a teenager. Confession: I saw it nine times in the theater, but have yet to watch it in its entirety once since it came out on video, because I am afraid I will hate it now and my fond memories will be spoiled.

. . . on the other hand, it occurs to me just now that Rose would be kind of awesome in Milliways.

Four and a half time in the theater since one time it cut out part way through.

Also I think I have the video tape but I've yet to buy the dvd. Two soundtracks? What are the two? Oh yes, Rose would be lovely.

Yes, there's a second one. Mostly it was an attempt to cash in on megafans, which I totally fell for. Without actually diving into my CD collection, I recall that it contains secondary tracks like a performance of "Come Josephine on Your Flying Machine," and suchlike.

I may someday download the movie. By which I mean purchase it legally, of course. *nods* But Rose would fit really well into Milliways, post-Titanic. *ponders*

See, I'm of the mind that one should own one's love for unpopular music without shame right from the get-go, so screw backlashes and the like. Just glower at anyone who gives you grief, and that's that. ;-)

I feel you are correct. Shame that the majority of us who claim we don't care what others think are big fat liars.

Ummmm I definitely saw it like four times and cried at each and every viewing. And I bought the soundtrack. No judging from me.

Hey, love what you love. We all have those songs we love for guilty pleasure reasons.

And movies and TV shows and... Yeah.

Very true.

. . . I still think John Barrowman should cover "Lin' La Vida Loca." There is no way that would not be amazing, in a pants-wettingly hilarious kind of way.

Rose and Jack...

Do you think that's a coincidence on RTD's part? I've always hoped not - and he did work with KW a while back ;)

As for the songs... I love them both, have never been ashamed to admit it (though I still think Trisha Yearwood's How Do I Live was the superior Oscar nominee and I don't care that it's country but I also think that year was an incredible year for Oscar songs in general).

But I still think Ricky Martin's hot so my taste may be suspect ;)

Re: Rose and Jack...

Oh, yes. "How Do I Live" is a great song, and always liked her version better than the LeAnn Rimes cover that got popular later.

As for the names, no idea. It is amusing, though. *g*

Re: Rose and Jack...

Yes. I like LeAnn Rimes but she was too young to do that song at the time. I really believe that was the difficulty.

I have no idea but it has amused me for a while. Someday I'm going to write Jack Harkness/Titanic Rose (and if I can summon up enough enthusiasm for Jack Dawson I may try the other way round too but I am Not Fond of Titanic Jack, he's a little boring).

Also I went to see Celine in concert when she came out here last year and I knew she wasn't done - because she hadn't done that song :) It was the second encore.

I am with [livejournal.com profile] owllover771 up there! As long as you admit that something is terrible and dorky and ridiculous, you are completely free to OWN that glee you take in it.

See also: my unrepentant love for godawful 80s music, and the number of whiny-boy artists I like solely because they're fun for me to sing along with.
