A rare meme appearance! I grabbed this one from [livejournal.com profile] austen.

Inspired by Doctor Who's "Turn Left:" Pick one of my stories (here) and tell me a point in the tale that you'd change. Something tiny (e.g. "and then Fay chose silver glitter instead of gold") or big (e.g. "and then Rose was arrested instead of Jack") and I'll tell you how that one difference would have altered the course of the entire story.

I'm about to head off to bed, and I'm working all day tomorrow, and then there will be Torchwood (I still cannot believe that I intend to WATCH it), but I will get to this.

And then instead of latching onto Owen, Michael latched on to Tosh.

Unlike Owen, Tosh is too happy to keep it to herself; after some deliberation (because, hey, after Mary, who could blame her for wanting to keep her love life the hell separate from Torchwood?) she confides in Gwen. Gwen is thrilled that Tosh is happy and of course insists on meeting Michael.

Gwen is good at reading people, though, and also isn't being drugged out of thinking too closely about the situation (because normally, being targeted again by a romantic interest would ring a billion warning bells for poor Tosh), so Michael makes her uneasy. Gray's a good actor (the part where he's fucking insane helps with that) but lacks his brother's copious quantities of natural charm. She's covering as well as she can, but Gray's not having with any of that. Gwen is a potential wrench in the works; Gray wants a little longer to become an inextricable part of Tosh's life before he kills her.

So he goes after Gwen, but there's a new factor he hasn't counted on: it's not too long after "Meat" (the Tommy ep played out differently, of course, but ultimately with the same end result for the plot) and Rhys knows the truth. As a result, he's paying closer attention to Gwen and their surroundings, he's more ready for unusual dangers, and his reaction time when Gray (trying for a mugging-gone-wrong type of scenario, because he's just that full of himself) attacks is just that much faster than it would have been a week ago. Yes, even with the sling. That is how awesome Rhys is. No little sling injury is getting in his way when Gwen is in danger. So he and Gwen take Gray down and oops, now Gray's in prison.

From there, Gray's entire plan unravels. Tosh is devastated, and new, kinder season two variety Owen responds to this more empathetically than he would have before. Jack, similarly heartbroken but unaware of the extent of his brother's murderous impulses, arranges for Gray to be remanded into Torchwood's custody. Gray escapes and gets the fuck out of there, and later Cardiff as a whole will pay the price.
