So some of you may know that the Sweet Valley High series is getting republished, complete with updates to make the books less dated more contemporary. I don't really know how this is going to work in the long term, since half of SVH's plots can no longer occur with the invention of cell phones.

A list of some updates to long term continuity has been provided. Quick, see if you can spot the most horrifying example.

Jesus Christ. Like a perfect size six wasn't enough to live up to.

Isn't it depressing? It reminds me of observations I've seen about how Marilyn Monroe would now be considered obese by Hollywood standards.

I'm trying to figure out how the Wakefields are going to get kidnapped every other week if they have cellphones. I'm thinking Ned's going to have to do some extra lawyering to pay for all the phones that gonna get lost or broken.

If only they were still size six cows, they wouldn't have to worry about it.

I used to love those books. I'm expecting to be horrified when I click the link.

. . . What? Which one is more horrifying? I can't decide.

I was kind of going for the one that sucks all the funny out of the room.

Oh yeah. I had a major WTF moment when I saw that. Like girls these days don't have enough complexes. Ugh.

My sister just pulled out one of the books today ('Ms. Quarterback'), and I was thinking about that series. Coincidential , whut.

Ugh. Guess TPTB missed the memo on not completely fucking up the self-image of young girls.

You know, I still own several of those books, and I debated passing them on to my cousin's 8 year old daughter. I decided they weren't really the kind of thing she needed to be reading, and I really hope she doesn't catch sight of the updates.

I was more into the Sweet Valley Twins books myself when I was a kid, which was probably just as well. SVH is fucked up in a way that SVT just isn't. I mean, SVH is hilarious to read now, and it didn't do me any harm when I was a teenager, but eight is probably a bit young.
