Have received phone call from rogue ex-employer! He is thoroughly embarrassed by what happened, so much so that I didn't have the heart to give him a tongue-lashing, and has promised me what he owes me plus a hundred extra. I'm going to go in today at some point and we will see what we see.

Thanks to everyone who offered me advice on this situation. Looks like I know some very helpful people who rock a whole lot. ♥
