So today I had an exam to see about getting my wisdom teeth out (the surgery is scheduled for January sixteenth, which is exactly a week before my birthday. Happy birthday to me!). Since my grandmother drove me out to the office, I went over to their house and had dinner with them.

I was watching the news with my grandfather and they had a little blurb about Golden Globe nominations, including a bit on Brokeback Mountain. I squeed over footage of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger goofing around adorably together, but I did it discreetly, because while I've never actually discussed homosexuality with Grandpa, he strikes me as the type who would have Views. He openly admits to being prejudiced against blacks, after all (not proudly, mind you, he's not an ignorant bigot, but he is a product of the era he grew up in). The blurb described the movie as being about "two male cowboys who fall in love." And while I am in mid-squee, Grandpa goes,

"That looks like it would be fun to see."

Me: ". . ."

So either Grandpa's more progressive than I thought he was, or he was having a hard-of-hearing moment. I'm going with the latter, since his hearing is not great, and assuming that he was going off the western-looking images. Still, though, it was a great moment. Maybe we should go see it together when it comes out here.

HAHAHAHA no. My grandfather's a good person - I'm just recently coming to appreciate him and how well we get on, which is a shame because he's got emphysema and it won't take much to finish him off - but I really don't think a gay cowboy movie would be the best bonding activity.

Annnnyway. I had my wisdom teeth out in highschool, as they were impacted. I basically spent a week on the couch in the basement, doped up on tylenol codeine, drinking ensure, watching movies and trying not too move too much. Lost a few pounds though ^_~

i had my wisdom teeth pulled last thanksgiving (so i couldnt eat anything) and it was one of the worst/painful experiences of my life. but they hadnt grown in yet so the dentist had to cut my gums and pull them out, so thats why they might have hurt so bad. two of my brother had them out and they were fine the next day. i always get the bad side of everything.

Why do I get the feeling that I'm going to hear a lot of stories like this? When I was wearing a brace on my wrist for a while at work, I would tell people it was tendinitis and they would be all, "I had that! My arm fell off three times AND THEN I DIED." People love sharing the horror stories.

Yeah, my friend's sister had a dry socket, and another friend had a complication with a cyst, so I am not excited. And I get a month to look forward to it.

If it's of any comfort, when I had my wisdom teeth pulled (all four at the same time), the worst problem I had was food occasionally getting stuck in the one incision that was the widest and slowest-healing. That was it. I think I took painkillers for, like, one day and then I was over it.

I was lucky enough to be out to my grandma and have her be pretty much completely cool with it (except for a few misconceptions that died hard about gay people). I realize that's a rare gift, and I still cherish it even though she's gone now.

She wouldn't have gone to see Brokeback Mountain with me either but not due to the subject matter; rather she didn't like megaplex style theaters, especially the sound volume. The last time she ever saw a movie at the theater (Kiss The Girls) she complained all the way home about how she thought she was going to be deafened before the film was over!
