HA, so much for pretending that the trade deadline doesn't exist. I had a very clear, vivid, coherent dream about Millar being traded to the Astros for Chad Qualls, which was one of the first rumors to start going around. Not gonna happen, since I think the Astros are going to stick with what they've got (it certainly seems to be working for them), and also what do they need with Kevin Millar when they've got Lance Berkman and Mike Lamb for first base? But what an odd dream to have. I mean, normal people would dream about something ridiculous, like trading Papi to the Rockies for a pair of batting gloves and a tube of Neosporin, but not me.

And speaking of the Astros, man, have I ever been slipping on my game posts. I love writing them while I'm doing it, but getting myself to get started is becoming a bit of a chore. Tsk on me. Anyway, I've missed the last two Astros games, I think the last two Tigers games (god, I miss watching the Tigers, I hate West Coast games), and last night's Red Sox game. So, cut tag, and this time I know the alphabet.

ASTROS

First I must report that I was mistaken in my last roundup. Thursday's win did not put them in the front of the NL wild card race, it tied them for first. It was Friday's win that put them in first place.

Wandy Rodriguez continues to look nothing like the unnerving, "aw, man, he's starting tonight?" rookie he was in the beginning of the season. He gave up just two runs and four hits in six innings. I wonder if the team's improved playing has bolstered his confidence - after all, the way they were playing before, not even Roger Clemens could win a game. What chance did a rookie have? But his game has improved along with the rest of the team's. Also, he continues to be named Wandy, and for that I also love him.

This was another game where all the runs scored on homers, and off a pitcher (Kris Benson) who had only given up eleven homers going into the game. They came from Craig Biggio, Lance Berkman, and of course, Morgan Ensberg. In case you hadn't noticed, Morgan Ensberg is my Houston boyfriend, which is hilarious because since I can't won't don't watch the games, I wouldn't recognize him if I bumped into him on the street.

Final score: 5-2.

Yesterday's game was a pitchers' duel. Andy Pettitte and Tom Glavine were both tremendous, but in the end it was Andy who threw eight shutout innings (with Lidge, of course, getting the save). Glavine gave up a homerun to Jason Lane, which was all they would need, but later Morgan knocked in an RBI, courtesy of Braden Looper, just to be safe. Final score: 2-0. As the game recap points out, "Houston got great pitching early this year, too, but this was the kind of game it would've lost 2-0 in April and May." Isn't that the truth.

RED SOX

Remember when I was the only damn Red Sox fan on the planet with any faith in David Wells? Was I right or what? He has kicked ass lately, getting seven wins in his last eight starts. Last night he had a shutout going till the eighth, when he wavered a bit and gave up two runs.

In other news of yayness, Gabe Kapler is back! Aww, I didn't realize how much I missed him until I saw him on the field.

There was some nice hitting happening, and amazingly we only wasted loaded bases once; when we got them later, we got some runs out of it thanks to John Olerud and Tek. Final score: 6-2.

Today, Jon Papelbon starts. Since he was here in Portland pitching for the Sea Dogs earlier this year, I am excited about this by default.

TIGERS

I hope you boys realize that you are killing me. Sam said it best, I think: "Then again, if this schizophrenic ‘win/lose/win/lose/get to .500/crash and burn for a bit’ thing the Tigers have going on is them being healthy, maybe they need to try something sick and depraved for a while." This in regards to possibly having to start Vance Wilson instead of Pudge for a bit, but I'll get to that.

Friday's game: An 8-4 loss. I suppose Sean Douglass couldn't be amazing forever. I don't think he's gonna fall down and die or anything, but considering how well he's pitching since he came up from AAA, I guess he was due for a bad start. Harden also sucked for the A's, but lucky him, the Tigers could only manage four runs on fifteen hits. You know, maybe it's just as well that I haven't been able to watch them this week. That pisses me off enough just reading about it, I probably would have had a stroke watching it.

Yesterday: I HATE JAY PAYTON. I HATE HIM BECAUSE HE IS A BITCH AND I HATE HIM BECAUSE HE SUCKS AND I HATE HIM BECAUSE HE GOT A GRAND SLAM OFF MY NATE. Fuck you, Payton. You suck at life. 5-9, and I don't want to talk about it, except to be sad that I missed Pudge having a spastic attack and getting ejected. And chucking shit out onto the field. So, probably a suspension for him too, meaning, yay, Vance Wilson would be starting catcher. Vance Wilson is hitting at less than .200, and also I have noticed that our pitchers are not quite as good with him catching as they are with Pudge. On the other hand, at least a suspension would give Pudge's broken hands a bit of a break, which can only be a good thing.

Today Bondo starts, and depending on whether I EVER hear back from [livejournal.com profile] manderspander in re: watching the Sox game together today, I might miss it, as both are day games. This makes me nervous, as he lost the last start I missed, and since [livejournal.com profile] americanleaguer kindly filled me in on the history between Bondo and A's, I really, really want him to kick their asses. But I cannot let superstition get in the way of hanging with a friend I haven't seen since February. Especially since she's promised to buy me a Tigers cap. (AND ONCE I AM WEARING THAT CAP, I WANT TO SEE SOME DECENT BASEBALL BEING PLAYED, DO YOU HEAR ME, BOYS?)

There. All caught up, for a few hours anyway. I have got to get back in the habit of staying on top of this.
