Today's cynical thought to grow on:

Marriage does not equal love. Marriage equals the luxury of certain rights, such as insurance stuff (which, to my vague understanding, doesn't necessarily require marriage anymore) and the right to visit your mate in the ICU. The reason why I support gay marriage is because of equality - gays should be allowed to enter into an antiquated institution just like everyone else, dammit.

CORRECT. Thou shalt not pass laws (or refuse to pass laws) that result in the creation of second-class citizens! Who gets hurt if everybody gets to get married? NOOOOOOOOOBODY!!!!

Jon Stewart really nailed it when he was talking to... that guy... uh.., meh, some political dumbfuck who opposes gay marriage. Jon just puts it to him like, "Here's what I just can't get past. You're saying that if two women have been together for 50 years, and one gets sick, the other one can't visit her in the hospital? I just can't get past that." And all the guy could do was hem and haw because how on earth are you supposed to respond to that without looking like a gigantic asshole? That's right, boys and girls... you can't. Should we be gleaning something from that?

That's certainly better than my reasoning for wanting to get married to the woman of my choice: "Because I wanna. Now gimme that there license, ya bastards!"

I want the right to fight over who makes more money. I want the right to file jointly. Hell, I want the right to have screaming matches with my wife over the taxes. I want the right to ask my wife what the hell she's doing with my credit cards every day, and does she think I'm made of money? I want the right to hate the china pattern she picked out. I want the right to get kicked out of bed and have to sleep on the sofa. I want the right to be told I'm boring in bed. I want the right to be bitter, cynical, and loveless, just like every other American couple.

That's right. Gay people should be allowed to leap blindly into an ill-advised situation just like straight ones. And the hospital thing, too. I've always been hung up on the hospital thing. It makes me crazy that a straight couple married for six months have the right to visit the ill or injured partner, but a gay couple that have been together for twenty years do not. That is WRONG. Wronger even than the equality issue, for me at least.

All it proves is that gay people are just as insane as straight people, really. We're fighting for the right to be conventional sticks-in-the-mud. Only somebody completely insane would want that. -laughs-

But the hospital thing...yeah.

I know it's trivial, but I wanted to take my girlfriend to prom last year, and it was just completely out of the question. Which bothered me, because every other person there had a date. Most of whom they didn't know or didn't like or who had been set up with, just for the sake of having a date. Whereas I had somebody I legitimately wanted to bring and I wasn't allowed.
