HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Those are sarcastic caps, because today my dad's doctor sent him to the ER.

Now before you get anxious on my behalf: it's not a huge scary he-might-die situation. Guess who wouldn't be at home updating her LJ if it were? So don't worry. (Much.)

He's had this boil on his back for a little while now (and I don't mean a small boil here, I mean that on Christmas he looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame), and a few days ago thrush showed up in his mouth, so his stubborn ass finally made an appointment to get looked at, and it turns out he has diabetes. My sister and I also learned today that he hadn't seen a doctor at all since his died TWENTY YEARS AGO, which I think gives you an idea of where the diabetes came from.

So he's still in the hospital - his blood sugar was so ridiculously high that one of the rounds of bloodwork after they hooked him up to insulin came back as having gone DOWN to 588. (That is, I am told, REALLY FUCKING HIGH.) He was so looped when we first got there that I assumed painkillers were involved, but as his blood sugar crept down, he got more coherent. There will be surgery tonight or tomorrow to remove the boil. The hospital he's in is about a two-minute walk from me, so I'm going to swing by in the morning before I go to work.

I'm not super-worried, but I am a little tense - the last time I spent any time visiting in a hospital was when my grandfather died, and my mom's friend's husband recently died during a routine surgery, so hrgh I don't like it.

But now I am going to have a nice glass of Bailey's and see if I can't get another Thick of It post done. Yay for self-assigned projects serving as distraction!

Mood-booster: The grade for my WWI&II class finally came in. B+! After the trouble I had with that last test, I expected, like, something in the C range.

I give up ever predicting my grades again. All four of my classes finished with higher grades than I expected. Clearly I suck at this game.

Summary: A (Sociology), A- (British Literature: Oscar Wilde and the Fin de SiƩcle), B+ (World War I and World War II), B (Irish Literature and Culture). Best semester I've had in quite some time.
